Folding door: a short buying and fitting guide

When space is tight, even an ordinary door can cause you trouble. The good news is that interior-design specialists have thought about these situations too, and there are now plenty of folding doors on the market that help you save space without giving up on looks.
A folding door – an ideal choice for any home
Folding doors can be fitted in any space and give a home a tidy, elegant look. They are most often used, though, for rooms where a normally hinged door could not be fitted for lack of space. Before you buy one, here is what to watch out for:
- size: measure the opening very precisely, so that once fitted the door sits perfectly in place and closes properly;
- colour: decide what colour your door will be, matching the other doors in the house or the palette already in the home;
- if you are going to fit it yourself, make sure you have all the tools you need.
In the Promo Plus range you will also find a folding-door model that comes in several colours: cherry, mahogany, white, wenge or oak. Its dimensions are 80 cm wide and 210 cm high.
Where can you fit a folding door?
Anywhere :). A good folding door can be fitted to any room, from the bathroom and bedrooms through to a dressing room, hallway and so on. In an open-plan space you can separate the kitchen from the living room with a door like this, closing it only while you're cooking and leaving it wide open the rest of the time.
In the same vein, you can split a space into a relaxation area and a work area using a folding door. Or, if you have a larger balcony, you can partition it with a folding door to create storage.
These doors are made from a hard-wearing PVC that is easy to look after. The variety of shades they come in makes them perfect for any style of interior.
How do you fit a folding door yourself?
Fitting a folding door is not difficult at all, especially if you measured correctly. For tools you need a drill, plus the right plugs and screws for the wall the door goes into (wood, concrete and so on).
The folding door comes with the rail it slides on and two posts, which you fit either side of the opening.
- First you need to fix the rail with a single screw at its midpoint. Then rotate it so its ends are perpendicular to the door threshold.
- Start putting the “body” of the door (the sliding rollers) onto the rail — much like a curtain — and once they are positioned, rotate the rail into place horizontally and fix it for good with a screw at each end.
- Next come the posts, and adjusting the door so it hangs straight and closes properly.
