Ceiling light – how do you fit it?

If you don't fancy fitting the ceiling light yourself, the best thing is to call an electrician. But if you want to do the job yourself, here's how simple it is.

The first and most important thing to do is cut the power at the main board, to avoid accidents that can be not only serious but fatal. As an extra precaution, once the power is off, check the connecting cables with a multimeter. For the ceiling or wall light you are about to fit, make sure you pick a ladder or a solid table that will hold you securely.

Here are the tools you'll need:

• a drill;
• cable pliers;
• a pencil;
• a hammer;
• wall plugs;
• a screwdriver.

Careful! Use a bulb of the right wattage for the fitting, as stated on the product sheet, to avoid overheating and a possible short circuit.

To fit the light, take off its bracket and hold it over the connecting cables. Mark the fixing points with the pencil, then set the bracket aside. With the marks made, drill the holes and push in the wall plugs. Put the bracket back on the wall or ceiling and screw it down. Once that's done, wire the fitting up following the instruction manual. Then put the bulb or bulbs in and attach the body of the fitting, making sure all the wires sit inside. Switch the power back on and check everything is in order.
