When you're after a practical, good-looking and not very expensive way to hide a ceiling that isn't quite straight — or simply to change the look of a room — the easiest answer is to fit a polystyrene false ceiling.
Polystyrene false ceiling – the advantages
Polystyrene false ceilings suit both offices and homes. One of their advantages is how easily they go up: you don't need many tools, just enough polystyrene ceiling panels, a good adhesive and polystyrene mouldings to finish the edges. Being a very light material, a polystyrene false ceiling won't add load to the building's structure. And unlike other materials, polystyrene costs less.
Another important advantage is that polystyrene is a good insulator. A polystyrene false ceiling can therefore help you save energy and keep the temperature in the house comfortable, in winter as well as in summer. Besides thermal insulation, polystyrene also gives you good sound insulation, which makes it ideal in large rooms where echo can build up, improving the acoustics.
As for looking after a ceiling like this, repairs are easy. A polystyrene ceiling is made up of several panels, so if one or more of them is damaged for any reason (water ingress, knocks and so on) you can replace just the damaged panels without taking the whole ceiling down.
Polystyrene false ceiling – how do you fit it?
As we said, fitting a polystyrene false ceiling is simple. The first thing to do before you go and buy the panels is to measure the area carefully, to work out how much material you need. Besides the ceiling panels you also need adhesive, paper tape, polystyrene mouldings (and some plaster for any repairs that come up during fitting).
The type of surface the ceiling goes onto doesn't matter. What matters is that it is well cleaned of dust and cobwebs, and that it isn't damp. This is also the moment to repair the surface, if it needs it.
To stick the ceiling up, put adhesive on the back of the panel and start from the centre of the ceiling working out towards the edges. When pressing the panels home, avoid pressing too hard so you don't break the polystyrene. Use a soft cloth to press the panel gently, helping it bond to the ceiling and spreading the adhesive evenly. The joints between panels can be filled with silicone — we recommend Silicon Universal Decor Plus, white or clear. To finish, fit Decor Plus polystyrene mouldings around the edges.
